Hamas calls for truce plan based on Biden’s proposal ahead of talks
Hamas has requested that mediators present a truce plan based on previous discussions instead of creating a new ceasefire deal for Gaza. The group is specifically looking for a plan that aligns with US President Joe Biden’s May 31 ceasefire proposal, as well as previous frameworks outlined by Qatar, Egypt, and UN Security Council Resolution 2735. They are also seeking the release of Israeli captives in Gaza and Palestinians held in Israeli jails as part of the agreement.
Despite ongoing Israeli airstrikes in Gaza, leaders of the US, Egypt, and Qatar have called for negotiations between Israel and Hamas on August 15 to finalize a ceasefire and captive release agreement. Hamas has not outright rejected the invitation, but is calling for real pressure to be exerted on Israel to close gaps in the agreement. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has insisted on a full defeat of Hamas, while Hamas is demanding the original proposal be enforced.
The recent attack on the al-Tabin School compound in Gaza City, which resulted in the deaths of approximately 100 people, has been condemned by Hamas as an escalation of Israeli aggression. However, the group has stated that they will continue to adhere to the proposal put forth by mediators. The upcoming talks will be significant as Hamas negotiates with Gaza leader Yahya Sinwar for the first time following the assassination of Ismail Haniyeh.
