Desmond Burks, who was previously arrested for fatally punching a 67-year-old driver in a road rage incident, has now been charged in the murder of Detroit neurosurgeon Dr. Devon Hoover. Hoover was found dead in his home, shot multiple times in the head. The community was shocked and grief-stricken by his murder. The case was complicated by reluctance from witnesses to come forward with information.
Authorities discovered 4,000 text messages between Burks and Hoover, revealing an intimate relationship between the two. Burks allegedly provided sexual services to Hoover and charged him for it. Hoover’s body was found wrapped in a blood-soaked carpet, with his belongings missing. Fraudulent transactions were made from his bank accounts shortly after his murder.
Evidence, including surveillance video and the location of Hoover’s cellphone, placed Burks at the scene of the murder. Police also found Hoover’s watches at residences connected to Burks. Burks had already been in jail on a second-degree murder charge for the death of Reda Saleh, who was killed in a road rage incident.
Burks is being held on a $1 million bond, and it remains unclear what motivated the murders of Hoover and Saleh. The police chief expressed condolences to Hoover’s family and thanked them for their patience during the investigation. The prosecutor remarked on the amount of work that went into gathering evidence to charge Burks in both cases. No attorney information for Burks was provided.
