American Olympians are experiencing success in Paris, with six athletes from Team USA earning at least four medals each. Swimmers Torri Huske and Regan Smith lead the team with five medals each, followed closely by Kate Douglass, Katie Ledecky, and Gretchen Walsh, along with gymnast Simone Biles, who have all earned four podium finishes.
French swimmer Leon Marchand currently holds the most gold medals at the 2024 Olympics, with four titles, drawing comparisons to Michael Phelps. Biles and Huske are tied for the second-most gold medals at three each. The record for most gold medals won at a single Olympics is held by Phelps, who earned eight golds in the 2008 Beijing Games.
Chinese swimmer Zhang Yufei leads the overall medal count, with six medals. There is a five-way tie for second place between several athletes with five medals each, including Huske, Marchand, Smith, and Australian swimmers Kaylee McKeown and Mollie O’Callaghan. There have been three instances of athletes winning eight medals at a single Olympics, with Aleksandr Dityatin being the first to achieve this in 1980.
The 2024 Olympics in Paris will conclude on Sunday, August 11, with several sports still having medal events on the final day. The closing ceremony will follow shortly after the end of events.
