Connecticut Democrats came together in support of Vice President Kamala Harris and her running mate, Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, at a rally on Tuesday. Governor Ned Lamont expressed full support for the Harris-Walz ticket, calling Connecticut “100 percent lined up” behind them. The rally took place in front of a mural in Hartford depicting influential women including Harris, former Gov. Ella Grasso, and former First Lady Michelle Obama.
At a press conference following the announcement of Walz as Harris’ pick, Democrats endorsed him as a candidate who can connect with working class voters, particularly in swing states. Republicans criticized the choice, with Connecticut Republican Chairman Ben Proto calling Walz a “big government liberal” and questioning his record on issues like abortion access and the minimum wage. However, Democrats defended Walz, emphasizing his strong record on public safety.
Representative Joe Courtney, who served with Walz in Congress, endorsed him over the weekend, citing his ability to understand the issues facing small town and rural America. With the upcoming Democratic convention in Chicago, Harris officially became the party’s presidential nominee with a virtual vote. The convention was moved earlier to ensure Harris and Walz could appear on Ohio’s ballot as candidates. Democrats are now focused on rallying support for the Harris-Walz ticket and their policy platform ahead of the presidential election.
