Michael Phelps, former Olympic swimmer, has called for tougher sanctions against those who test positive for banned substances in the wake of a Chinese doping scandal. Phelps believes that anyone who tests positive should receive a lifetime ban from competing. This comes after 23 Chinese swimmers tested positive for a banned substance before the Tokyo Olympics, with some winning medals in Paris. Phelps emphasized the importance of a level playing field in sports and has subjected himself to extra testing during his career to ensure he was clean.
Phelps, who has been vocal about issues like mental health and anti-doping, recently testified before the U.S. Congress for reforms in the anti-doping system. He stated that athletes who cheat should not be allowed to compete again to maintain the integrity of the sport. Phelps was not surprised by Léon Marchand’s performance at the Olympics and praised his achievements. He also addressed the poor conditions athletes faced in the Paris athletes’ village and hopes future hosts will consider the needs of athletes.
Despite speculation, Phelps has ruled out a comeback to competitive swimming, citing his desire to spend time with his family as a priority. He acknowledged that he could still compete against today’s swimmers but values his family time too much to make a return to the sport. Phelps continues to advocate for clean sport and fairness in competition.
