North Korean leader Kim Jong Un oversaw the delivery of 250 new tactical ballistic missile launchers to front-line troops, which have been described as a modern tactical attack weapon personally designed by Kim. The launchers are ready to be transferred to Korean People’s Army units on the border with South Korea. South Korea expressed concern that the missile launchers could be used to threaten or attack them, as North Korea recently test-fired a new tactical ballistic missile. The range of these launchers is not long, as they are deployed near the border.
Photographs released by North Korean state media showed rows of launchers lined up beside red banners calling for victory under floodlights at the event attended by Kim. In his speech, Kim blamed the United States for creating a “nuclear-based military bloc” that forced his country to strengthen its military capabilities.
South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff spokesperson expressed concern about the deployment of these launchers near their border. Seoul’s unification ministry spokesperson stated that North Korea’s illegal nuclear and missile programs are the primary threat to peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula. The delivery of these launchers and North Korea’s continued missile testing has raised tensions in the region.
