Preview of Water Polo: Current standings as we head into the last day of group play

The men’s water polo tournament at the Paris Olympics is coming to a thrilling conclusion with just six games left before the playoffs begin. On Monday, the field will be cut from 12 to eight teams, with the top four teams in each group advancing.

One of the key matchups includes two-time defending Olympic gold medalists Serbia facing off against Hungary, with both teams currently sitting at 2-2. Serbia is looking to secure a quarterfinal spot, while Hungary is trying to avoid falling to the No. 4 spot in the group.

Japan, already eliminated from quarterfinal contention, will take on Australia, who can move to No. 1 in Group B with a win and a loss by Spain. Italy, the only unbeaten team in Group A, will face Greece, currently sitting at 3-1.

The USA, with a 2-2 record, is set to play against Croatia, who is currently second in Group B at 3-1. France desperately needs a win against Spain to keep its quarterfinal hopes alive, with Spain guaranteeing the top spot in Group B.

In the final game of the day, Romania and Montenegro, both winless and out of quarterfinal contention, will battle it out.

The playoffs are shaping up to be intense, with teams fighting for their spot in the next round in this highly competitive tournament.
