Cleanup efforts are underway in Simsbury, Connecticut after a microburst caused severe damage to the town. On Friday, heavy winds and rain led to dozens of trees falling on homes and streets, with some residents experiencing power outages for up to 30 hours.
One resident, Jamie Cunningham, described how the storm hit suddenly, causing significant destruction in his backyard with around 25-30 trees collapsing. Another resident, Elizabeth Marquis, shared her experience of seeking shelter in the basement with her dog, only to find a tree crashing through her family room skylight.
Despite the widespread damage, no injuries have been reported, and the town is receiving support from the state to aid in the cleanup efforts. The Simbury Public Works Department estimates that nearly 400 homes were severely damaged and expect it to take one to two weeks to clear the debris and fallen branches.
U.S. Rep. Jahana Hayes has visited the area and is requesting federal disaster funding to assist with the recovery process. Residents are eager to return to normalcy and are hopeful that the cleanup efforts will restore their homes to their previous condition.
