NBC Connecticut Highlights the Best of Olympics Day 9


On the ninth day of the Paris 2024 Olympics, the United States had a standout performance, taking home 10 medals including five gold, two silver, and three bronze. This brought the U.S. into a tie with China for the most gold medals at 19 each. One major highlight was American track star Noah Lyles’ incredible photo-finish win in the men’s 100m. Lyles beat out Jamaica’s Kishane Thompson by just .005 seconds to claim the gold medal.

In addition to Lyles’ victory, Team USA also secured gold medals in cycling, swimming, and golf. Scottie Scheffler clinched gold in a thrilling golf match, while Bobby Finke set a new world record in the 1,500 freestyle swimming event. The American women’s 4×100 medley relay team also set a new record in their event.

Tennis great Novak Djokovic secured his first Olympic gold medal by beating Carlos Alcaraz in the men’s singles final. Djokovic achieved the career “golden slam,” becoming only the fifth player to win all four Grand Slams and an Olympic gold in singles. Another noteworthy performance came from American gymnast Suni Lee, who won bronze in the uneven bars.

The U.S. women’s basketball team continued their dominance by finishing group play undefeated, while cyclist Kristen Faulkner pulled off a major upset to win gold in the women’s road race. Beach volleyball team Sara Hughes and Kelly Cheng advanced to the quarterfinals, and the women’s indoor volleyball team also clinched a spot in the quarterfinals.

Overall, Team USA had a successful day at the Paris Olympics, showcasing their talent and competitive spirit across a variety of sports.
