Maduro vows to crush opposition after controversial election in Venezuela

Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro has vowed to “pulverise” anyone challenging his rule following the disputed election last week, leading to a crackdown that has resulted in over 2,000 arrests and at least 22 deaths. The EU and Canada have expressed concern over the violence and called for the release of political prisoners. Maduro, who claims victory but has yet to provide evidence, rejected criticism during a military ceremony, urging troops to maintain order. Protests have continued in opposition to Maduro, with charismatic leader María Corina Machado calling for continued resistance. Opposition candidate Edmundo González, who claims victory, has called for an impartial verification of election results. The US and other countries have recognized González’s win, while neighboring left-wing governments urge Maduro to release detailed data. In response, Maduro has refused to relinquish power and continues to refer to his opponents as “demonic forces.” The situation in Venezuela remains tense as the international community calls for respect for democratic principles and human rights.
