Tragedy Strikes as Bounce House Flies into Air, Fatally Injuring Boy on Maryland Baseball Field

A tragic incident occurred in Maryland when a bounce house full of children went airborne and crashed down onto a baseball field during a Southern Maryland Blue Crabs game in Waldorf. The inflatable was carried 15 to 20 feet into the air by a wind gust before crashing onto the field. A 5-year-old boy from La Plata was airlifted to a children’s hospital and pronounced dead, while a second child was airlifted with non-life-threatening injuries.

County emergency services personnel and team trainers tended to the children, and condolences were expressed to the families by Charles County Government Commissioner President Reuben Collins. The bounce house had been set up at Regency Furniture Stadium for the game but was carried over a wall by the wind. Witnesses reported that the bounce house had been secured by stakes hammered into the ground.

The Southern Maryland Blue Crabs canceled all baseball activities after the incident and are offering support to families, players, and fans who were in attendance. The team’s General Manager Courtney Knichel shared condolences for the family mourning the loss of a child and concern for the injured child. The town of La Plata, with a population of about 10,000, is situated around 70 miles southwest of Baltimore. The incident has left the community in shock and mourning the tragic loss of a young child.
