Severe thunderstorms have been wreaking havoc across southwestern Connecticut, with a flash flood warning in effect for central Fairfield County until 6:30 pm. As of 5:45 pm, United Illuminating has reported close to 17,000 power outages due to the storms, which are bringing damaging winds, downed trees, power lines, lightning, hail, and local flooding.
Temperatures are high, ranging from the upper 80s to mid-90s with heat indices near 100°. More severe thunderstorms are expected on Sunday, so it’s crucial to have a plan B to seek shelter quickly if necessary.
The situation is expected to improve on Monday, but a front from the north may stall across Connecticut on Tuesday and Wednesday, potentially bringing a tropical storm late next week. A tropical wave currently in development could become Tropical Storm Debby over the weekend before moving towards Florida and potentially up the Eastern Seaboard.
The weather forecast for the upcoming days includes hazy sun, hot and humid conditions with scattered thunderstorms on Sunday, mostly sunny skies on Monday, and the possibility of thundershowers on Tuesday. Showers and thunderstorms are expected on Wednesday, with a mix of sun and clouds on Thursday. On Friday and Saturday, a stalled front with a nearby tropical storm is anticipated, so residents are advised to stay tuned for updates.
