Australian surfer determined to return to the water after losing leg in shark attack | New South Wales

Australian surfer, Kai McKenzie, 23, who had his leg bitten off by a suspected three-meter great white shark off North Shore beach in New South Wales, is on the road to recovery after undergoing surgery at John Hunter hospital. The attack left McKenzie in a stable condition, with his severed leg later recovered on shore.

Despite the traumatic experience, McKenzie remains positive and determined, promising to be “back in that water in no time.” In an Instagram post, he described the attack as a “crazy scene” but expressed gratitude for the support he has received from well-wishers and donors to a GoFundMe page set up to assist his family with medical expenses and rehabilitation.

While McKenzie’s ability to surf again is uncertain, he remains hopeful, stating, “I can tell you now if you know my personality this means fuck all.” He acknowledged the kindness of those who have shown support, saying, “It’s so cool to see so many beautiful people support me.”

The McKenzie family expressed their appreciation for the bystanders, first responders, and medical staff who assisted in the aftermath of the attack. The GoFundMe campaign has raised over $150,000, highlighting the outpouring of generosity towards McKenzie’s recovery. The family’s statement emphasized the importance of community support during this challenging time.
