Big Y will be closing delis temporarily following a Boar’s Head deli meat recall due to potential listeria contamination. Boar’s Head is recalling more than 200,000 pounds of liverwurst and other deli meat products that may be contaminated with listeria, a potentially deadly bacteria.
The recall comes amid an investigation into a listeria outbreak that has already resulted in two deaths and dozens of illnesses across 13 states this year. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has reported a total of 34 illnesses related to the outbreak, with the majority requiring hospitalization.
Big Y stated that they will be destroying all potentially impacted products and thoroughly cleaning and sanitizing their deli departments as recommended by the USDA Food Safety and Inspection Service. The company’s senior director of fresh foods emphasized that these measures are being taken out of caution for customer safety.
The recalled products include liverwurst and various deli meats produced between June 11 and July 17. The products were distributed to retail deli locations nationwide and bear the establishment number “EST. 12612” inside the USDA mark of inspection on the labels.
Customers are advised to discard any of the recalled products they may have purchased or return them to the store for a refund. Authorities continue to investigate the source of the contamination while companies like Big Y take necessary precautions to prevent future incidents.
