Vice President Kamala Harris stated she is ready to debate Donald Trump after accusing him of backpedaling on a debate agreement. The debate was set to be hosted by ABC News on Sept. 10 but Trump has expressed a preference for Fox News. Despite this, Trump has also said he would be willing to face off with Harris more than once. Harris did not respond to a question about the possibility of Fox News hosting a debate. Debate arrangements are pending until Democrats formally decide on their nominee, according to a Trump campaign spokesperson.
Republican consultant Alex Conant believes the debate could be decisive as it is the only time voters really tune in. The potential power of a debate was demonstrated when Joe Biden’s poor performance in June led to a decline in his support and the end of his reelection bid. Meanwhile, actress Jennifer Aniston has expressed disbelief over Republican Vice-Presidential nominee J.D. Vance’s past comments about “childless” women.
It remains to be seen if the debate between Harris and Trump will take place and on what platform it will be hosted. The willingness of both candidates to engage in such an event indicates the significance of debates in the presidential race.
