Connecticut Representative Jeff Currey to step down after five terms in office, will not seek re-election.

Rep. Jeff Currey, a Democrat from East Hartford, has announced that he will not seek reelection for a sixth term this fall. Currey cited “professional opportunities” that he cannot yet disclose as the reason for his decision. Despite receiving a kidney transplant four years ago, Currey assured that his health is fine. This marks the end of an era for the Currey family, as there will be no Currey holding elective office in East Hartford for the first time since 1982. Both his late mother, Melody, and his father have held positions in the state government.

Currently serving as the co-chair of the legislature’s Education Committee, Currey’s departure will create an opening for a new candidate in the safe Democratic seat of the 11th House District, which covers parts of East Hartford and Manchester. The Democratic party will be free to nominate a replacement for Currey.

The news of Currey’s decision comes as a surprise to many, as he has been a longstanding figure in East Hartford politics. While details about his future professional opportunities remain undisclosed, Currey has expressed his gratitude for the support he has received throughout his political career. The end of his term in January will mark a significant shift in the political landscape of East Hartford.
