Typhoon Gaemi heads towards China’s Fujian after ship sinks off Taiwan | Weather Update

A Tanzania-flagged freighter carrying nine crew members sank off the coast of Kaohsiung, Taiwan, due to strong winds caused by Typhoon Gaemi. Rescuers were unable to access the area due to poor visibility and high winds. The typhoon made landfall in Taiwan before heading towards southern China, where it is expected to cause heavy rains and flooding. In Taiwan, Gaemi led to the deaths of at least two people and left more than 200 injured. Schools, government offices, and the stock market remained closed in affected cities, and hundreds of flights were cancelled. In China, authorities in Fujian have issued flood alerts and relocated thousands of people in preparation for Gaemi’s arrival. Train services and flights in the region were also suspended. Northern China has been experiencing heavy rain from a separate weather system, leading to evacuations and train service suspensions in Beijing. Gaemi also caused flooding and landslides in the Philippines, resulting in the deaths of at least 20 people in Manila and surrounding areas. The situation remains severe in these regions as they deal with the aftermath of the typhoon and heavy rains.
