The House voted in favor of establishing a bipartisan task force to investigate the attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump on July 13 in Butler, Pennsylvania. The task force will look into the actions of federal, state, and local law enforcement leading up to the event. Seven Republicans and six Democrats will serve on the committee, which must issue a final report by Dec. 13 with recommendations for preventing future security lapses. House Speaker Mike Johnson emphasized that protecting the safety of the nation’s leaders is a bipartisan responsibility.
The Department of Homeland Security is also conducting reviews into Secret Service planning and preparedness related to the shooting. Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle resigned following criticism of her performance before the House Oversight Committee. The gunman, Thomas Matthew Crooks, was identified as a suspicious person prior to the attack and was killed by the Secret Service during the incident. He flew a drone over the venue before carrying out the shooting.
The task force, formed by House party leaders, aims to understand what went wrong, ensure accountability, and prevent similar failures in the future. The resolution was supported by 416 members of the House, with 16 abstaining from voting. Despite political differences, the House is united in its commitment to the safety and security of the country’s leaders.
