A recent recall for cucumbers sold at select Walmart stores due to potential listeria contamination has been expanded to include additional bagged produce items sold at Aldi, Walmart, Kroger, and more grocery stores across multiple states. The Ohio-based company Wiers Farm Inc. expanded the recall to include green beans, peppers, jalapenos, zucchini, yellow squash, and more items packed between July 5-12. The products were sold at various grocery chains in 18 states.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that listeria monocytogenes can cause listeriosis, a serious infection with potentially fatal consequences. The FDA alert advises consumers to discard any recalled products and seek medical attention if experiencing symptoms like fever and gastrointestinal issues.
This move comes amidst a recent listeria outbreak linked to sliced meat sold at grocery store deli counters. Last week, the CDC reported that at least two people have died and more than two dozen have been hospitalized. The recall for the sliced meat was delayed due to uncertainty regarding which specific products were contaminated.
The FDA has not received any reports of illnesses or complaints related to the expanded produce recall. The agency recommends consumers to be cautious and take necessary steps if they have consumed any of the affected products.
