Hartford Woman Honored for Changing Lives Through Library Program

HARTFORD – Homa Naficy, a naturalized citizen, has been recognized on a national level for her work at the Hartford Public Library. Naficy is one of 24 recipients of the “Great Immigrants, Great Americans” award presented by Carnegie Corporation, for her dedication to the community through The American Place (TAP) program.

TAP provides resources such as English as a Second Language classes, college application assistance, financial literacy, and help with U.S. citizenship applications. Naficy’s mission is to support new arrivals and address service gaps in the area.

Participants like Belen Abaricio and Roman Shirzai have found success through TAP, with Abaricio preparing for college applications and Shirzai pursuing his dream of becoming a nurse and then a doctor.

Since January, TAP has helped 148 individuals complete U.S. citizenship applications with a 98 percent pass rate. City leaders praise the program for building connections within the community.

Naficy’s award is a tribute to her lifelong commitment to helping immigrants succeed in their new country. She hopes to continue inspiring others and sees the impact of TAP firsthand through the gratitude of Abaricio and Shirzai.
