Dutch firms secure funding to advance tidal energy projects in the Wadden Sea area

Dutch Companies Receive Funding for Tidal Energy Projects in the Netherlands

Two Dutch companies, Equinox and Seaqurrent, have each received over €2 million in funding for the development of tidal energy projects in the Wadden Sea region. Equinox plans to develop a pre-commercial turbine by 2025 with the received €2.4 million, while Seaqurrent will use their €2.5 million to develop a kite that rotates figure eights on a cable, capturing more energy than conventional tidal technologies.

Pieter de Haas, the chief executive of Equinox, sees this funding as a significant step towards making the marine energy sector a commercial reality. Equinox aims to revolutionize the energy sector by providing a consistent and reliable power source. Seaqurrent’s innovative multi-wing design Tidalkite unit will be launched near the southwest tip of Ameland and convert the current in the sea into electricity.

Generating sustainable electricity through tidal energy projects is a new frontier in the Netherlands, where solar panels and wind turbines have dominated the industry. To make tidal energy profitable, an entire park must be built on the seabed, similar to offshore wind projects. Both Equinox and Seaqurrent are committed to meeting the growing demand for clean energy solutions and expanding their global footprint with these new developments.
