Three individuals have been charged in connection with the murder of 16-year-old Joshua Vazquez in New Haven. Vazquez was shot and killed while riding his bike on Valley Street in December 2022. The shooter, identified as 19-year-old Angelo Gibson, has been arrested and charged with murder, as well as other firearm-related charges. Gibson’s mother, Latasha Brown, faces charges for hindering prosecution and criminal liability of acts of another as she was identified as the driver of the car during the shooting. A third person, Ronald Miller, has been charged with tampering with evidence.
New Haven Mayor Justin Elicker stressed the importance of holding adults accountable for facilitating violence among youth. Family and friends of Vazquez gathered as city officials spoke about the arrests, with Alderwoman Honda Smith describing Vazquez as a beacon of hope. A family friend, Unique Trujillo, stated that she believed justice was being served for her friend. Gibson remains in custody, with his next court appearance scheduled for August 31. The arrests bring some closure to the community and Vazquez’s loved ones as they continue to mourn the loss of a young life taken too soon.
